Neil Kazaross

"The best way to improve at backgammon is to get your hands dirty and really work to learn to understand this game".

"I find streaks, in general, can last for a couple years at a time, good or bad, and I am serious. Way more of a streak than one would think possible".

"You cannot be a top tournament backgammon player if you do not know what the match equity is. Believe me".

"I win so many games because I'm ahead in the race, it's shocking. People just think I'm lucky, I roll doubles and my men run around the board. I want to be ahead in the race almost no matter what."

"One of the reasons I've done so well in matches is my understanding of how to use the cube at different scores."

"I would also like to see many more Swiss tournaments. Forget single and double elimination. In a Swiss tournament the better player will almost always place."

"Life, like backgammon, is constant decision-making under uncertainty."

All of the above can be attributed to one of the Giants of Backgammon, America Neil Kazaross, this ranked at No 2 (2005) in the list of Backgammon Giants second only to Nack Ballard since 1993 Neil has never been out of the top ten taking tournaments by storm, including this year’s British Open.

His book Backgammon with the Giants written in 2001 still ranks among the highest in demand for backgammon players regardless of their status, perhaps much of this is due to the style of writing, his co-producer in the book Antonio Ortega says of Kazaross, "he is probably the most charismatic player in the world of backgammon".

In a review of the book Steve Sax comments "Neil’s comments take the reader inside his thought process and emotions, nobody understands backgammon positions like Neil does."

Neil Kazaross is one of the best backgammon players in the world. During the past decade he has been ranked highest in Kent Goulding’s International Rating List, was five times "Player of the Year" at Chicago’s Bar Point Club and won the "American Backgammon Tour" twice.

In a recent "Top 32 Giants of Backgammon" survey, Neil’s peers ranked him second player in the world.

His analysis is invaluable and he is often seen on the BG forums answering questions or delivering strategies, he continues to write illuminating articles, and also presents live commentaries at international tournaments, and seminars. Neil’ has also developed one of the best match equity tables for the game to make the whole process much more understandable for all types of players.

Now the better part of 50 Neil continues to enhance the backgammon world; doubtless 2007 will hold for him many tournament challenges and the possibility of World Champion cannot be too far from his mind.
