Backgammon - A Journey
Backgammon has a cherished tradition of being a game restricted to the world of nobles, Lords and Emperors only. History witnesses the fascination and whims of the elite class and nouvelle rich when they see something as fashionable or desirable and tries to manufacture it.
This is true of the evolution of backgammon so long in the hands of the elite society, now to use a metaphor, in the hands of the 'servants'.
The most respected gurus in backgammon like Jacoby, Walter Cookie, Crawford, Bill Robertie, Holland and Eisenberg – none of which belonged to that exclusive elite society, were all eminent players who emerged in the 1980s and 1990s, from a background that was mostly Bridge (Card Game) or Poker masters.
In this somewhat compact club backgammon's resurgence came to seed and the roots spread to the remotest corners of the globe through the Internet.
Today, backgammon and now online backgammon online sites such as www, .play65.com provide the right flavor and taste to suit every level.
One of the most dramatic differences over the years has been the speed of the game. Even the pace that Jacoby or Crawford had in their time has undergone a dramatic change compared to Walter Cookie or Bill Robertie. Speed took the game into a new lane and a new highway.
A contributing factor to this is the doubling cube. It is said that doubling in backgammon is the brainchild of a gambler, but it is also the genius of a backgammon player that makes it work.
There is no doubt backgammon and online backgammon have come a long way since the Kings and Queens first presided over the polished mahogany boards and ivory pieces, their private pastime now a game of the masses.
