Poker and Backgammon - Oil and Water?
Drawing the comparison between Poker and Backgammon, is like comparing oil with water, only there are several similarities between both. Oil and water are both liquids, poker and backgammon are both games; oil is a source of energy as is water. Poker can be played for fun or for money, backgammon the same. Oil can keep you warm in winter; water can keep you cool in the summer. Poker and backgammon can be played both online and offline.
These are the main differences in our analogy; However there some others to look at, most poker games can be over in five minutes, whereas backgammon can take up to half an hour to play. Poker is designed for multi players, whereas backgammon is the intensity of two players.
- Both games need skill and luck. This makes them both great gambling games for that reason.
- Poker and backgammon are suitable for cash games and tournament play.
- Players can raise the stakes in both games (through betting in poker or in backgammon the doubling cube
- The basic rules are relatively simple, but to become expert requires dedication and hours of practice.
- Both backgammon and poker are games that are played face to face. But both adapt well to online gaming whether for fun or for money.
- When a player raises an illegal amount in poker, if the opposition calls it, the pot is pushed and another hand is played, the mistake stands.
- In backgammon, if a player makes an illegal move, i.e. moves nine pips after rolling a 4-3, both players can correct the situation, but it must be done before the next dice roll.
- Maths and probability are part of the process of what plays to make in both games. Drawing up to a flush in poker requires an estimate of the odds; the same is true in backgammon when using the doubling cube, basing the probability on calculating the winning odds with or without the doubling cube.
- In both poker and backgammon there is a need to stay ahead of the game, predicting the next move not only of yours, but that of your opponent is a skill that needs to learnt in both games, get that right and you'll be a winner in poker and backgammon.
