WHO’s WHO?
Backgammon players as we know come from all walks of life and from all backgrounds. The introduction of internet backgammon has made that audience swell by hundreds and hundreds of thousands. So the attraction for the game just keeps going and growing. Among some of the fans of the game past and present are the rich and the famous.
Here are just a selection of the great and the good backgammon players, some you might well know some you might not have heard of at all, they all have one thing in common, they play backgammon.
Legendary gambler actor and star of Dr. Zhivago, Omar Shariff once had a backgammon column. I Love Lucy Star Lucille Ball was said to love playing backgammon. Super Sleuth Don Adams of 'Get Smart' fame used to play at the Cavendish West Hotel, before shows.
In between takes of his spectacular Westerns John Huston would often relax playing the game, possibly against John Wayne. The ET and Indiana Jones's Movie Producer and Director Stephen Spielberg plays against would be actors who lose to him to progress their careers, rather than take his money off him.
Playboy guests can often see Hugh Hefner playing with his bunnies. Sean Connery the original James Bond is said to be a hustler in the game, having taken money reputedly off a Bond Producer to the tune of 25,000 dollars. On the same theme Izabela Skorupko, a James Bond girl is a renowned backgammon player.
Marge Champion the name is probably not well known, but her body certainly is, as she was one of the live models for Disney’s Snow White animation spectacular, she was also appeared in Disney’s Fantasia.
Stephanie Powers before she became Mrs. Hart in Hart to Hart was taught the game as a little girl by her Uncle, who also taught her how to drink brandy and smoke cigars.
Actors Greg Grunberg and (Flashdance's and A Few Good Men) Kevin Bacon are backgammon fans big time as Greg says -"He's my hero! Kevin says with a smile on his face, even though I'm such a better backgammon player than he is."
One of the most famous literary world's children’s author's Lewis Carroll whose books Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865) and Through the Looking Glass (1872), are timeless classics, but did you know that Carroll was also a games inventor and a devotee of backgammon he even put forward ideas for improving the game?
Actor/Director Claude Earl Jones thinks Backgammon is "the most challenging of all games" and enjoys playing online. It's even possible you could end up playing him in one of the many thousands of online backgammon sites, such as www.play65.com.
Spiderman and wall crawler Tobey McGuire turns from Super Hero to Super Villain when he gets onto the backgammon board. Speaking of music, Sound of Music Star Christopher Plummer commenting on his relaxing style alludes to the following; "In the midst of this rustic serenity, the Plummers savor endless games of backgammon, Elaine's gourmet French cooking and Christopher's expert renditions of Chopin on the Steinway."
Gladiator’s Caesar Joaquin Phoenix states, "I just stay home and swim and read scripts and play backgammon." Whilst Titanic Star Kate Winslett spent her honeymoon in the Yorkshire Dales where she was seen playing backgammon in the public bar of the nearest hostelry.
And backgammon has even influenced the lives of Royalty Her Majesty Queen Margrethe II of Denmark, is an avid backgammon player. In a famous TV portrayal of the Royals several minutes was dedicated to a backgammon match between Queen Margrethe and Prince Henrik; she calling him "A lycky bastard".
But we will leave the final credit to the US President Thomas Jefferson who was known to play backgammon keeping meticulous records of his winning and losing matches. His record keeping probably helped him to slash Army and Navy expenditures, cut the budget, and eliminate the tax on whiskey, reducing the national debt by a third.
